Red Panda Facts Behavior, Habitat, Diet
The red panda (Ailurus fulgens) is a furry mammal with a lush red coat, a bushy tail, and a masked face. Although both the red panda and the giant panda live in China and eat bamboo, they are not close relatives. The giant panda is more closely related to a bear, while the red pandas next of kin is a raccoon or skunk. Scientists have long debated the red pandas classification; currently, the creature is the only member of the family Ailuridae. Its body ranges from 20 to 25à inches and its tail is 11 to 23à inches. Males are slightly heavier than females, with the average adult panda weighing 6.6 to 13.7 pounds. The pandas face has distinctive white markings, somewhat similar to those of a raccoon. The bushy tail has six rings, which serve as camouflage against trees. Thick fur covers the animals paws, protecting them from the cold of snow and ice. A red pandas body is adapted for feeding on bamboo. Its front legs are shorter than its hind legs, giving it a waddling walk. Its curved claws are semi-retractable. Like the giant panda, the red panda has a false thumb extending from its wrist bone that aids in climbing. The red panda is one of only a few species able to rotate its ankles to control a head-first descent from a tree. Habitat and Distribution Red panda fossils have been found as far away as North America, but today the animal is only found in the temperate forests of southwestern China and the eastern Himalayas. Groups are geographically separated from each other and fall into two subspecies. The western red panda (A. f. fulgens) lives in the western portion of the range, while Styans red panda (A. f. styani) lives in the eastern part. Styans red panda tends to be larger and darker than the western red panda, but the pandas appearance is highly variable even within a subspecies. Red Panda Global Distribution. IUCN Diet Bamboo is the staple of a red pandas diet. Like the giant panda, the red panda cant digest the cellulose in bamboo, so it has to eat a huge amount of bamboo shoots (4.8 kg or 8.8 lb) and leaves (1.5 kg or 3.3 lb) each day to survive. In other words, a red panda eats its weight in bamboo every day! About two-thirds of a red pandas diet consist of bamboo leaves and shoots. The other third includes leaves, berries, mushrooms, flowers, and sometimes fish and insects. Due to its low caloric intake, nearly every waking hour of a pandas life is spent eating. One interesting fact about the red panda is that it is the only non-primate known to taste artificial sweeteners. Scientists speculate the ability helps the animal identify a natural compound in food with a similar chemical structure, influencing its diet. They are crepuscular and nocturnal, spending the day sleeping in trees and using the night to mark territory with urine and musk and to seek food. They clean themselves, much like cats, and communicate using twittering sounds and whistles. Pandas are only comfortable at temperatures ranging from 17 to 25à à °C (63 to 77à à °F). When cold, the red panda curls its tail over its face to conserve heat. When hot, it stretches on a branch and dangles its legs to cool off. Red pandas are preyed upon by snow leopards, mustelids, and humans. When threatened, a red panda will try to escape by running up a rock or tree. If cornered, it will stand on its hind legs and extend its claws to appear larger and threatening. The mating seasons runs from January to March, during which mature pandas may mate with multiple partners. Gestation lasts from 112 to 158 days. Females gather grass and leaves to build a nest a few days before giving birth to one to four deaf and blind cubs. Initially, the mother spends all of her time with the cubs, but after a week she starts venturing out to feed. The cubs open their eyes around 18 days of age and are weaned around six to eight months of age. They remain with their mother until the next litter is born. Males only help raise young if the pandas live in very small groups. On average, a red panda lives between eight and 10 years. Conservation Status The IUCN has classified the red panda as endangered since 2008. Worldwide population estimates range from 2500 to 20,000 individuals. The estimate is a best guess because pandas are difficult to spot and count in the wild. The species population has declined about 50 percent over the last three generations and is expected to continue to fall at an accelerated rate. The red panda faces multiple threats, including deforestation of bamboo, increased death from canine distemper due to human encroachment, habitat loss, and poaching for the pet and fur trades. Over half of red panda deaths are directly related to human activity. Captive breeding programs at several zoos are helping protect the red pandas genetic diversity and raise awareness of the animal. The Rotterdam Zoo in the Netherlands manages the red panda international studbook. In the United States, the Knoxville Zoo in Knoxville, Tennessee, holds the record for the largest number of red panda births in North America. Can You Keep a Red Panda as a Pet? Although the red panda is cute and cuddly-looking and breeds well in captivity, there are several reasons its not a common pet. A red panda needs a massive amount of fresh bamboo each day. It requires a large enclosure, canine distemper vaccination, and flea treatment (infestation can be lethal). Red pandas use anal glands to mark territory, producing a strong smell. Pandas are nocturnal in captivity, so they dont interact much with people. Even hand-raised red pandas have been known to get aggressive toward their keepers. Former Indian prime minister Indira Gandhi kept red pandas in a special enclosure. They had been presented to her family as a gift. Today, obtaining a pet red panda is inadvisable (and often illegal), but you can aid conservation efforts in zoos and in the wild by adopting a panda from the WWF or Red Panda Network. The research particular interest was in direct correlation with the study of goals in psychology, and how motivation is affected in terms of how your goals are constructed and carried out. What has been previously studied and examined is how goals are the basis of certain maladaptive patterns, and thus conceptualizing important differences and how a person perceives and behaves and what personality is best suited for them. Improving my Academic Writing: Academic writing is nothing but putting forth the research and the scholars ideas to the academic peers and is usually confined to the academic crop of people who are domain specific. In order to put the work efficiently, the academic writers needs to get adapted to observing certain etiquettes and strong academic rhetoric. The content of the writing needs to be ably framed so that the users must not face the hassles. The colloquial phrases, language verbosity and the run on sentences needs to be avoided. The content of the writing should be in line with the established facts and has to be well founded (Freedman et al, 2014). Responsibility- the writer should be responsible enough to provide the justification and proper evidence for the claim made in the writing and should demonstrate the understanding of the text used in the writing. Learn to reference in APA 6th edition: The referencing in APA is used for the citation of the various sources and is commonly used in the social sciences and the style uses the method of author date citation. There is direct and indirect quotation used in the APA. The APA format is one of the format for writing used for publication, essays and books. The style is established by the American Psychological association and its begin with the title and is followed by the name in the next line and the name of the organization or school. After the basic information has been provided the inclusion of the author note is optional. Running head is also included in the APA style (Richards Rodgers, 2014). The necessary part of the APA style is Citation which depicts the users the source of research and ideas. The direct quotation from the original work should not be used in order to avoid the plagiarism. The paraphrasing should be done in accordance with the necessary citation and the references used are the magazines, journals, books, newspaper and websites and various genuine resources. Recognizing the plagiarism is the main objective of the report presented here and the plagiarism in the report has been avoided by making the reference to the APA 6th edition style. I was not having clear idea about the way of writing but most of the doubts and misconception about is got resolved and I was able to rectify my prior mistakes. This also provided me the platform to learn much about the academic integrity and the hesitation while referencing was removed as I was well equipped with the knowledge of referencing using this particular style. I also came across several other styles of referen ces used in the academic writing and learned about them also. The plagiarism would be prevented if at the end of the assignment, the various aspects of the source should be provided in the reference list as reference and this would include using the quotation marks and APA style of formatting along with the in text citation . The in text citation would consist of page number, year of publication and the name of authors. Doing this would reflect the original content of the source of writing from where it has taken from (Sharan Shachar, H. 2012). Learning outcomes is the description of what I have learned while writing and demonstrating the skills and the knowledge acquired. I was not well acquainted with the citation method and the plagiarism and therefore I enhanced my knowledge in this regard by attending the lectures and reviewing the tutorials and study guide guided me to gain the knowledge. The software which assisted me in detecting the plagiarism is the use of the Turnitin and turnitin is such technology which has heled me in improving my writing and it closed the loop of feedback between me and the instructors. It engaged me throughout my process of learning with the targeted feedback. The originality of the documented presented by me was checked using the turnitin and checked my work for the citation that may not be proper. The software make the comparison with the academic database for checking the potential plagiarism. It also allowed me to view my original format which I used to submit and my original texting, fo rmatting was easily viewed by the instructors (Smith Candlin, 2014). Developing a Growth Mindset: The thoughts that is the thinking ability of the researchers are extremely vital for the success develop a Growth Mindset. The growth mindset is basically the belief of the people that the basic abilities of the people is developed through the hard work and dedication that is talent and brain of the people is the starting point. This forms the basis of learning and is essential for the accomplishment and the growth mindset shapes the understanding of the learning. The students having the planned program would be able to enhance their skills and help them in performing better. The growth mindset helps the student in taking the challenges and gaining the knowledges from them and it helps them in achieving and increasing their abilities. The hard work and the efforts cultivates the growth mindset. Dr Dweck discovery of growth mindset helps in shaping the understanding of the learning. The growth mindset of the students is promoted through the learning plan and helps in reaping the profi ts. Dweck found that the growth mindset creates a learning passion and the deliberate practice and the efforts would be able to cultivate the relational capacities which are also the human qualities (Murphy Dweck, 2016). The main context in this regard is to manage the performance throughout my career of academics and identifying the style of learning so that it can be implemented in the professional and personal life as well. The positive enforcement was provided by the Decks theory as discussed above. There are different form of learnings that I have learned by reviewing various notes, lectures and also tutorials. My learning approach was faced with some constraints such as exposure to the fixed mind set style and there were some prior defeats associated with self-sufficiency. The performance of the student gets damaged by several things and the growth mindset does not allowed me to get influenced by the negative factors impacting the performance. I am able to achieve my long and short term objectives and enhanced my performance with the help of growth mindset. The growth mindset has encouraged me take up with the challenges because it does not see the failure as something that is unintelligence bu t provides a platform to stretch the existing abilities (Claro et al, 2016). Characteristics of a Successful Oral Presentation: In order for the oral communication to become successful the students needs to pre plan somethings to ensure its success. I was to present, myself at the university for which I was allotted with some relatively new topic which I was not adequately aware of. Moreover, the presentation was to be made in front if huge audience so basically I was anxious and nervous in delivering the speech. For addressing, the effective mode of communication should be used which would create the impact on the audience. I realize that my performance can be effective only if the effective strategy is implemented. Therefore, before finally delivering the presentation the students should develop extensive framework and should have lots of practice done (Rutherford, 2014). The presentation has to be concise, certain and attractive and should make point to consider the audience. Therefore, it should be able to create two way communication in the sense that the audience is getting to understand what you are exactly wanting to make them understand. However, the audience neutrality of the audience is a must factor in order to make the oral presentation effective. Other factor to be considered is that the presentation delivered should not be biased and has to be free from emotion, errors and imbibes patience. The consideration of the above facts would make the oral presentation effective (Tomlinson, 2012). Conclusion: I prepared this learning plan with the intention to achieve the objective of achieving the objectives of learning which would fuel my career growth. The aim of the report was to make myself well acquainted with the features of academic writing and developing the work that is free from all sorts of plagiarism and developing the positive mindset that would help me in facing the constraints and also developing the strategy of successfully making the oral presentation. Recommendation: I was able to detect my shortcomings while having done this assignment and I came across few negativities that has to be removed to improve my academic performance. In order to improve my writing skills I need to work on my drawbacks and this needs a lot of continuous practice and strictly follow the guidelines for effective writing as provided by the university.
