Answer: Values and Characteristics of Nursing Professionalism Nursing professionalism entails caring aspects. The acts of caring often encompass empathy and connecting with the people involved. The ability of a nurse to demonstrate traits of care incorporates the core values of nursing aspect. The core values which dictates nursing professionalism includes human dignity, integrity aspects, altruism, autonomy and social justice to the patients. The caring roles embody and integrate these nursing aspects while caring for the patient. Careful integration of these values ensures that caring behaviour is entrenched in the nursing profession, (Jones, 2014). Actions based on the case study As a Nurse, my actions will characterise values of caring for the patient in the seeking help. Thus in meeting these needs of this patient, there is need of bearing in mind professionalism values, attitudes and attitudes characterised by the profession. Other traits which characterises nursing profession have been group into common Cs for nursing practice. These nursing traits are compassion, competency during practice, communication aspects, courageous aspects and commitments to the field of nursing, (Leibing, 2010). These characteristics endure values and behaviours that reflect caring aspects whenever put into practice. In ensuring that nursing profession is practised effectively is ensured for the patient, there is need for building cooperation and strengthening cooperation. In bridging this, as a nurse I will offer assistance and maximise the well being of the patient which improves their well being in the long run. As a nurse there is nurse to provide positive care so as to enhance positive experience. Nursing profession is entitled to provide quality care and measuring of effects thus builds and improves the leaderships aspects My subsequent actions based on the cased study My subsequent nursing actions will be aligned to positive and strong values which gives the patient and their representatives the confidence and confidentiality. Thus there is need of inco-operating nursing values in order to inform the relationships with those seeking help, colleagues and even their own employers As a nurse professional, I have to be aware of these values and have a view of they interact to have positive behaviour to impact on human care and influence the cooperation and communication among colleagues and other health care professionals. Enhanced communication is established through enhancing relationship with the patient. The channel of achieving this is through building trust, establishing and maintaining genuine interest of the patient and showing empathy attitude towards the patient in your care, (Canale, 2010). Applicable strategies for therapeutic nursing communication skills is through aspects of active listening, observation sharing which is enhanced through building cooperation, showing empathy, information provision, seeking clarification and asking important questions, (Antipuesto Daisy, 2011). These values of communication are so much relevant and helpful in building positive patient exposure and essential in upholding professional values in nursing practice. Applying therapeutic communications in nursing profession has distinct role in building positive patient outcome. Thus, as a nurse there is need to strive for therapeutic interactions with patients. This enhances effective communication and strengthens integrative co-operation in health care practice Principles underlying ethical, legal and professional guidelines Nursing code of ethics in Australia has been enhanced and developed in a professional manner. It is based from standards enlisted by the United Nations, universal declaration of human rights principles. The nursing codes underpins the following principles which include nurses valuing quality care for all people, nurses entrusting respect and kindness for those under their care and nursing prioritization of quality nursing and health of the people. The codes further incorporate the principles of ethical management and valuing of social, economical and sustainable usage of resources which ensures that promotion of health is adhered to. The main purpose of ethical codes conduct is meant to ensure that ethical standards and values are committed and incorporated into professional nursing guidelines. They give the nurses the opportunity to have reflection and conduct of their own services. As a way of conforming to international practices, it accepts the standards of human rights action and health care perspectives which recognises, respects and promotes the safeguard the rights of the people towards attaining their health state, (Fry Johnstone, 2008) Ethical and legal implications of the nursing role in the case study In this case study there are ethical and legal implications which might arise in this case is the breach of beneficence. Acts of beneficence is meant for a nurse to provide good intent for the patient involved. In health care practice, it demands that health care providers provide develop and maintain skills which are beneficial to the patient. In this case study, there is breach of beneficence to the patient. As a nurse there is need to do good for the patient. Principles of non-maleficence have been breach in this case study by the registered nurse. Documenting that the right procedures have been done to the patient, of which they have not means that more harm has been done to these patient than good. Instead of applying the right procedure of care, none have been initiated on the patient and yet accurate information is being documented by my colleague. Australian Nursing codes and standards of practice The nursing codes in essence contain eight values which serve as guiding framework for nursing practice. The purpose of these codes serves as the statements which guide on the practice of clinical practice which the values must be upheld. These values reflect on aspects of self, person cantered and colleagues partnerships in health care provision. These values entail the following; Nursing value for quality care for all the people. This ensures that nurses value quality nursing which accompanies accountability for the nursing care they provide. It entails taking precautionary measures where possible, responsible reporting and report unethical behaviours with respect to treatment of patients. However in this case none of this value standard is being applied. instead of quality care being given to the patient, not care is given at all and yet it is being documented that it has been done. Nursing value on respect and kindness for others and self This ensures that value of moral worth is guaranteed to the patients. The value ensures that respect to individuals ethical values are adhered to aspects of kindness in the nursing profession. In this case nursing value of respect of the patient state has been ignored totally. The nurse ought to have respected the patient and provide the adequate care needed instead paper documenting is just being done by the nurse and yet no respect for the patient is being considered. Nursing value on access to quality nursing and health care provision to all This value ensures that people value and uphold the principles and standards of nursing care with respect to nursing and health care practices. This access commonly refers how an individual can have access, availability, acceptable and quality care. Access to nursing care practice ensures that all service are availed to all people and the ability to distribute services based on the need of the people regardless of any potential differences which may arise. In the case study, however there is limited access quality nursing care being offered to the patient. No health care provision service is being given to the patient by the nurse, thus contravening this principle standard of nursing practice. Value of culture safety in nursing practice in health care domain Safety culture is health care practice is aimed at ensuring that shared knowledge of importance of nursing in contemporary health is crucial towards administering safe health practices. Nurses in practice have the solemn role of supporting and ensuring that risks management process are undertaken in health care practice. Nurse further based on this code ensures support of open disclosure of adverse effects during the course of treatment, (Holmes et al., 2007). In the case study no risks care management and nursing care is being offered to the patient at this state. The nurse is not offering safe health care practice to the patient. This means that the patient will further deteriorate further and his sickness worsens due to lack of attentive care offered. Nurses value of ethics management of information Protection of information and confidentiality are meant to be performed with utmost confidentiality. It entails accurate information capturing which are performed on concepts of professionalism and integrity. The nursing code standard of practice is utterly being disregarded by the nurse. By documenting that adequate care has been provided is a falsehood to nursing codes of upholding documentation of accurate information. Thus nursing practice is ensured that it aligns itself towards professionalism and recognition of human rights. It aims at indentifying ethical standards and values which ensures that the nurses are committed to the set standards, ethical practices guidelines and best practice standards of practice. This standards, codes and practices provide nurses with reference on which to reflect based on the case scenarios as relevant to this task. Effective following of these standards ensures that the case study assessment of the patient is taken cared keenly and through following of the right procedure and not just theoretical practice but actual practical of nursing care concepts. Competency Standards, Codes of Ethics and Codes of Practice for the Registered Nurse Registered nursing practice entails the process of person centred care and evidence based approach which ensures that preventive, curative, formative and supportive care aspects are incorporated in the nursing practice. As a registered nurse there is need for professional development and maintaining relationship towards constructive care practices. Nursing practice entails Assesment, development and provision of safe care and quality nursing. Towards implementing the nursing practice care ensures following of nursing standards. These standards have been categorised into seven standards which involve; Engaging in therapeutic and building professional experience This standard in the case study can be achieved through ensuring the right care is administered to the patient through effective means. In this case this standard has been breached by the patient through the inaction of the nurse of ensuring critical care assistance to the patient. Maintaining the capability for practice in nursing care. In this it shows that the nurse is in capabale of providing right care to the patient. This act of not providing the needed care to the patient is meant to demean the nursing standards of practice. Providing safe, appropriate and responsive quality care for practice This standard of nursing practice has been grossly been contravened by the nurse, through not providing safe care for the patient. Instead there is no care at all provided by the nurse in documenting the nursing care practice, thus acting irresponsive to the patient practice. Proper comprehensive nursing assessments and In documenting nursing care provided there is need for any practising nurse to conduct an assessment of whether the care has been provided to the patient or not. Thus the actions of my colleague has contravened this nursing standard. The standards are aimed at specifying criteria which is needed to be implemented with respect to care practice for this patient. These standards work in line with the codes, guidelines, code of ethics which informs best practice of registered nurses, (NMBA, 2015). Developing skills in academic and information literacy Academic skills ensure effective nursing care profession. Academic standards and information ensures that nurses have adequate communication skills, which are able to offer nurses to listen to the patients empathize with them and provide key information with regards to diagnosis and treatment. Diligent nurse is altruistic in that the patient needs takes precedence, and strong essence having people to feel better and making health care practice work better and efficiently. In developing competencies, there is need to shape learning experience in nursing practice, taking active role in learning ensures that knowledge acquisition is obtained. Nurses possessing the ability to balance the hectic demands of medical practice and prioritizing nursing aspects is key. As a nurse there is need to demonstrate an understanding of medical knowledge and the relevant skills in nursing practice so as to offer effective care process to the patients. The essence of information literacy is enshrined to play critical role in nursing practice, especially when implementing evidence based nursing practice. Best practice in health care practices is often formed from informed research process, (Ross, 2010). The ability to utilize information is crucial in health care practice, plays a critical role in ensuring that clinical practice follows evidence based research practices. Modern nurses are always sensitized on following evidence based care which incorporates information literacy education precepts. Reflective approach to nursing practice According to NMC, (2015b), requires that as nurse there is need to provide effective feedback and establish an effective reflection for learning practice. Towards developing of a critical reflective perspective to nursing practise, Gibbs Reflective cycle will be used, (Gibbs, 1998). Based on the initial experience in nursing practice, there is need for efficient and self dedication to the practice of nursing experience. Handling patience of different needs and showing empathy are defining aspects of a nurse. There is need for courageous mindset, as many patients often come with heavy demands of care provision. Feelings and reactions based on nursing practice allows registered nurses who are big hearted, in that they can allow accommodation of various patients with different needs to be offered quality care. At times in nursing practice, patients can be wild and aggressive and as a registered nurse there is need sobriety and soberness in handling such patient in ensuring patent safety and care. Towards evaluation of nursing practice, there is need to often offer counselling to the staff so as to minimise psychological disturbances in nursing practices. Developing and offering refresher courses to nurses to update their skills and impact evident based practices is crucial in ensuring that registered nurses are practising efficiently. Nursing practice is relevant in ensuring safe and quality care is always provided to the patients. Learning opportunities portrayed by nursing practised are essential in ensuring that patients are always taken through effective care process that assures them of their safety and promotion of positive health state. Adequate consideration of professionalism, integrity aspects take centre stage in nursing practice.
